Former Brazilian footballer's head was delivered to wife by drug traffickers as warning
A former Brazilian footballer, João Rodrigo Silva Santos, has
been decapitated and his severed head delivered to his policewoman wife.
Police in Rio de Janeiro said they suspect local drug traffickers.
The police unit that Santos's wife belongs to has been involved in a crackdown on Rio's gangs launched by the government to clean up Brazil's main cities before the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics.
Santos, 35, was kidnapped at night as he left the food shop he was running in the district of Realengo after retiring from football.
Early in the morning, his wife heard a noise outside her house and went out to check.
A backpack she recognised as Santos's was on the floor outside of the door. Inside was Santos's head. The G1.globo website reported the assailants had carved out the man's eyes and tongue.
"He was a good family man. He lived for football and played until recently," Bruno Santos, a friend of the victim said. "He had no enemies."
Santos played in several Brazilian teams, mainly in lower leagues and also briefly in Sweden.
He began with Bangu in 1996, before having stints at Olimpia, Nacional and the Swedish club Östers.

Mourinho- Am not a magician, dont expect a repeat of 2004 season
Jose Mourinho insists that nobody should expect a repeat of
2004, when he swept to the Premier League title in his debut campaign
with Chelsea.
Chelsea went two points adrift of leaders Arsenal after loosing on Saturday 1-0 away to Everton making it their worst start in the Roman Abramovich era.
Mourinho has warned that things are different for him and Chelsea nearly 10 years on from when he arrived at the club from Porto.
"No, it is not 2004 all over again," he is quoted by the Daily Mirror.
"Then we lost against Manchester City in October - our only defeat. But that is not the point. We are not unbeatable. This is a different team.
"I came here to work - I don't say peacefully because I am the first one that does not like to work peacefully - but to work with time, to develop the players and play the best they and we can.
"We have to be effective, be adult and not naive. That is what we have to work on. We have to transform the beautiful football we played into goals.
"We are not a club who will accept in a cool way that things will come. We're going to chase it.
"The beginning of the season was hard. Away against Manchester United, away in the Super Cup against Bayern, and away against Everton.
"But Saturday was the story of a team with 21 shots that couldn't score a goal. That is the beauty of football."
